The season is changing in Huntsville, Alabama and now is the perfect time to think about your spring family photo session.

No matter what vibe you're looking for this spring, Huntsville has a location that will work for you and your family.

With a small-town feel and a city energy, Rocket City has consistently been rated highly as a great place to live - and it's one of the best for photography!

As a lifestyle photographer, spring truly brings me so much joy. The color palettes are lovely, the wardrobes are flowy, and and feeling of new life in the air fills everyone with a little extra kindness.

So come with me as I guide you through spring photography in Huntsville: the locations, the wardrobes, the timeline, and more!

All the Logistics

When should you book your Huntsville spring photo session?

The best time to book is as soon as you know you want spring pictures!

Huntsville is full of families with young children, which means that come spring and Easter, booking calendars are filling quickly. If you want to pick your date and have the time to plan, earlier is always the best choice.

As for time, spring sessions in Huntsville are best scheduled during March through early May, before the Alabama humidity sets in. The golden hour – approximately one hour before sunset – provides the most flattering natural light. With spring sunsets occurring around 7:00 PM, planning your session for around 6:00 PM will give you optimal lighting conditions.

Which Huntsville photographer should you book to take your spring pictures?

Choosing a photographer is an important step in the process!

Obviously I'm biased on this one. I'd love to be the person you choose to capture your memories and I bring years of experience to make sure your photos are everything you hoped for.

That being said, I'll tell you what I look for when searching for a photographer to take my spring pictures.

  • Someone with lots of family photos in their portfolio so I know they can photograph kids.
  • A person who has shot all over Huntsville; this tells me they'll have lots of ideas for when we are on location.
  • Someone whose editing style results in pictures I would like to hang on my wall.
  • A very clear process for how booking, sessions, and product purchasing will go.
  • Most importantly, I'm looking for someone who makes me comfortable.

You have to decide who is right for you, but if you want somewhere to start, I'm raising my heand!

Choosing a Location

Strolling in Big Spring Park

City adventures await (without the big city traffic) in Downtown Huntsville.

Downtown settings truly have so much to offer for spring family photo sessions. Green fills up the background and the sun stays up a little longer, giving us that sweet sunset and dusk lighting. Playing with textures and shapes means your session will immediately have a little extra interest.

Big Spring Park offers waterways, fountains, a cute bridge, shady walkways, and open green spaces, all right in the heart of Huntsville.

Pro Tip: If you have little ones, feeding the ducks is always a great way to get them involved AND take adorable pictures.

The Overlook at Blevin's Gap

Huntsville's best views.

This is the perfect spot if you're looking for vast gorgeous views. Stunning lighting and beautiful foliage are just a few reasons to choose this spot for your family session.

With clear walking paths and only a few hundred feet to walk to see this stunning vista, photos like this are available to anyone in Huntsville.

Pro Tip: The sunsets at this location are absolutely stunning!

Go Play at Haye's Nature Preserve

Huntsville's favorite place to frolic in a field.

I'm not kidding. This location is absolutely dreamy, complete with a river, beautiful bridges, fields, and breath-taking sunsets.

One of the best features of Haye's is how kid-friendly it is. Once we walk back to the open fields, they can run and play freely which makes for gorgeous carefree photos.

This is honestly one of my favorite spots, so if it speaks to you, let's make a plan!

Wardrobe Choices

What to Wear for Your Huntsville Spring Photoshoot

Styling in Rocket City

Let's talk wardrobe. Spring temperatures in Huntsville tend to be unpredictable, so it pays to be prepared. Whatever you decide to wear, make sure you bring light layers, like shawls or sweaters, just in case you get a little chilly.

Choosing Your Color Palette: Base Neutral Colors

Start with a foundation of timeless neutrals such as:

  • Soft whites and creams
  • Light grays and taupes
  • Warm beiges and khakis
  • Navy blues

Choose Mama's Clothes First

Because mom tends to have the most noticeable outfit, choosing hers first makes the most sense. Use your color palette and pick shades that compliment your family's coloring.

And mama, this is your opportunity to wear that gorgeous flowy dress hiding in the back of your closet. Layers, ruffles, lace, the whole nine yards. This is your time to absolutely shine!

Adding That Perfect Pop

Incorporate one or two accent colors that complement the spring season:

  • Soft sage green
  • Dusty blue
  • Blush pink
  • Muted lavender

Remember, your pop of color should be subtle – think a daughter's hair bow, a son's vest, or mom's flowy dress. This approach ensures your photos won't look dated in the years to come.

Keep it Simple

You don't need all new clothes or the perfect matching outfits. Choose clothes that are simple and that feel like you. Give your kids one or two options and let them pick which one they'd like. Make sure your shoes are neutral and comfortable.

More than anything, I want you to feel beautiful and like yourself.

And if you need some fresh options, I've got a whole client closet ready to go.

What should I bring to my spring session in Huntsville, Alabama?

  • Light layers (think sweaters, shawls, or even a light neutral blanket)
  • Snacks for your kids (and you)
  • A waterbottle
  • An umbrella, just in case
  • Your wonderful self and your family.
